MONTREAL – Shares of Bombardier Inc. hit a nearly seven-year high Wednesday after the C Series jet it developed secured the largest order since the announcement of a joint venture with Airbus.JetBlue Airways Corp. ordered 60 of the aircraft, renamed by Airbus as the A220-300, for delivery starting in 2020 with the option for another 60 starting in 2025.The firm deal announced late Tuesday was valued at US$5.4 billion at list prices, but airlines typically receive large discounts. The airline said the plane’s economics was the primary motivation rather than Airbus taking majority control over the aircraft’s joint venture which happened after JetBlue launched its 15-month review.“The marriage between Bombardier and Airbus was a secondary factor,” chief financial officer Stephen Priest said in a conference call.“But the good news about that when it came to fruition was it allowed us to reshape our Airbus orderbook to make sure that we continue to maintain our mid- to high single-digit capacity growth over the foreseeable future.”Bombardier shares climbed to $5.58 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange, a price last reached in August 2011. They closed up three cents at $5.43 in the afternoon session.Five A220 planes are scheduled to be delivered in the first year, ramping up to a high of 22 in 2024.JetBlue will become the first American airline to fly the larger A220-300 with 130 to 140 seats. Delta Air Lines Inc. ordered 75 A220-100s in the spring of 2016.The U.S. low-cost airline said it could switch some of its order to the smaller, 120-seat A220-100 plane.JetBlue said the decision to order the aircraft was driven by three strategic factors: profitability from the plane’s low operating costs, flexibility to use both aircraft models and its range.Priest said the A220 opens up the possibility of transcontinental flights and more options for overnight Caribbean flights.“This is a game-changer for JetBlue. It’s a real margin builder for our business…and so we’re very, very confident with the orders,” Priest said. The A220s will replace 60 Embraer E190 planes. JetBlue said it needs smaller planes, but the Embraer aircraft would require costly upgrades over the next decade. The airline also considered the new Embraer 195 E-2 planes. Priest said the competition was very tight, but the aircraft selected aligns with the other Airbus planes in its fleet.Analyst Benoit Poirier of Desjardins Capital Markets said JetBlue’s order confirms the strength of the Airbus–Bombardier partnership. He said more A220 orders could be announced at the upcoming Farnborough Airshow.Bombardier has said interest in the plane has surged since the announcement of the partnership.Airbus recently said it could book more than 100 A220 orders by the end of the year and slightly more than 3,000 sales over the next 20 years.Companies in this story: (TSX:BBD.B)

If you read my Skeptical Football column regularly last season (which I’m sure you did), you may already be familiar with my “gunslinger” obsession. But in case you’re new, here’s the quick recap: For a quarterback to maximize his ability to win, he has to take risks. Just as a coach failing to go for it in certain fourth-down situations costs his teams wins, so does a quarterback who doesn’t alter his game to exploit the situation he faces. Many times this means making decisions that can be costly to a player’s statistical efficiency — and often his popular reputation — in order to slightly improve his team’s chances of victory. In other words, throwing interceptions may not always be bad, and not throwing interceptions may not always be good.To celebrate the QBs willing to make this bargain, last year I picked a Gunslinger of the Week (the QB who set the best example of taking “good, smart risks in their relentless pursuit of victory, whether or not those risks succeeded”) each week. This season, we’re spinning that off into its own post, to be released on Mondays. (MNFers are eligible to steal the next week’s award, but only if they’re really really slingy.) So without further ado:Week 1Philip Rivers and defending Gunslinger of the Year Tony Romo both won despite trailing big and throwing multiple interceptions while they were behind. Those impossible wins are rare feats that I love to reward. But when I looked over the play-by-play, I was less impressed from the gunslinger perspective. Romo’s first interception came with less than a minute left in the first half, on Dallas’s own 20-yard line, and was thrown only 1 yard downfield on a first-and-10. “Good” interceptions are low risk/high reward — or sometimes high risk/high reward — but a bad short pass on first down in Romo’s own territory is high risk/low reward. His second came on a throw that went 2 yards downfield on third and 6, again in Dallas territory. Suffice to say, these were not the kind of plays that signify that a QB is pulling out all the stops to win; they were just good, old-fashioned turnovers.Rivers had two interceptions in the first half, including one returned for a touchdown and one on the Lions goal line. While he eventually pulled out an amazing win, gunslinging had little if anything to do with it. The Lions’ Matthew Stafford — a Gunslinger Award veteran himself — got a little too slingy for his own good and threw two INTs while in the lead to help the Chargers get back into things, and then Rivers sealed the deal with an impressively robotic but decidedly non-slingy stretch of 20 straight completions, only four of which went for more than 5 yards in the air (and eight of which were thrown behind the line of scrimmage).Note: Gambling by throwing downfield isn’t the only way to be a good gunslinger, but it’s certainly one way. Which leads us to this week’s winner:Ben Roethlisberger. This week 11 quarterbacks faced extended multiple-score deficits,1Took at least 10 pass attempts with their team down 9-plus points. and none pushed the ball downfield as hard as Steelers QB Roethlisberger:Playing the Patriots, Roethlisberger threw his passes the farthest downfield by far: on average, more than 12 yards per pass. That included seven attempts of more than 20 yards — more than the rest of these quarterbacks combined. After New England raced out to a 21-3 lead early in the third quarter, things looked pretty bleak for the Steelers. But Roethlisberger brought them to within 7 with a TD (plus 2-point conversion) and a field goal on the next two drives — each featuring passes completed 24 yards downfield. When the Patriots went back up 14, Roethlisberger continued to push, completing an 18-yard pass to get the Steelers to midfield and then going big with a 40-yard pass that was intercepted by Duron Harmon. There’s no shame in being intercepted on a throw that — if completed — would have set up a potentially crucial score with seven minutes remaining. On the final drive of the night, Roethlisberger would push his yard tally to 351 and get a meaningless TD with seven seconds left. But with two minutes left on that same drive — when he probably could have given up and padded his stats a little more easily — he was throwing a 29-yard bomb to Markus Wheaton that a defender got a hand on. Had that been successful, it might have given the Steelers a slim chance of winning instead of none. That’s the kind of choice I like to see.Reminder: If you tweet NFL questions to me @skepticalsports, there is a non-zero chance that I’ll answer them in Skeptical Football. Marcus Rashford has had a difficult situation at Manchester United lately as he hasn’t been playing that much this season and he has been struggling to secure his regular spot in the starting eleven. However, José Mourinho claimed that he has been already impressed a lot by Marcus Rashford and the young forward doesn’t have to prove anything to him as he has already done enough to show his real qualities. The Portuguese coach spoke about Rashford and also his opinion on Paul Pogba, according to therepublikofmancunia.com:Maguire says United need to build on today’s win George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Harry Maguire wants his United teammates to build on the victory over Leicester City.During the summer, Harry Maguire was referred to as the ultimate…“No. To impress me? He impresses me. That’s the reason why he was selected for every match of the season — absolutely every match of the season, and that’s why he played in so many of them, so he doesn’t need to leave to play or to need anything.”“I think he (Pogba) is going to be here next season. That’s my feeling. I can give the guarantee that I don’t want him to leave and that the club doesn’t want to sell him, and I can give the guarantee that we don’t have any approach from him or his agent or from any club. So at this moment, for me, he’s staying, yes.”
Sevilla defender Simon Kjaer insists that they hold no fear towards Lionel Messi or Barcelona ahead of their top-of-the-table showdown in La LigaLos Rojiblancos are the surprise leaders of La Liga on 16 points after the opening eight games of this season following Barcelona and Real Madrid’s struggles. But Sevilla’s one-point advantage over Barcelona at the top of the standings could change on Saturday ahead of their match at the Camp Nou.The reigning champions are the only side to have scored more goals than Sevilla this season with Messi netting six of those 19 goals and adding a further four assists. But Kjaer insists that Sevilla are not afraid of facing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner or the rest of the Barcelona squad this weekend.“Are there any more words in the world to use to describe Messi? He is simply a fantastic player, and when he hits his best level, it is extremely difficult to stop him,” Kjaer told SportsMax.“You can’t man-mark Messi, because Barcelona have so many other great players that they will just take advantage of the extra space you leave for them.“You have to defend collectively against Messi and reduce the spaces he can work in – and that way try to make sure that he will not have his best game against you.“Again, it is a pleasure – and to me basically the best thing in football – to play against the greatest teams and the greatest players. And try to beat them.”Quiz: How much do you know about David Villa? Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to test your knowledge about Spanish legendary forward David Villa. The last time Sevilla defeated Barcelona came in 2015 and it’s been eight years since they tasted victory at the Camp Nou.“You can’t go to Camp Nou with fear in your mind, because then you will get destroyed,” Kjaer added.“You have to believe in yourself as a team – believe in the way you play football. So no, we don’t fear them but obviously, we respect them as one of the greatest teams in the world.“Having said that, it is our job to make sure that they don’t reach their maximum level against us. And that we reach ours.“You have to make Barca uncomfortable and challenge them with your game plan, so that they have to focus on playing both ways – and not only attacking the opponent. Parking the bus is not an option at Camp Nou. Then you will lose nine out of 10 times.”Una imagen vale más que mil palabras 🙉 Gracias a todos los que nos ayudáis en el día a día para que podamos daros esta alegría a [email protected] los sevillistas. Ilkay Gundogan believes Manchester City must win the Champions League to be noted as an elite football club. The Citizens have managed just one semi-final in their pursuit for Europe’s greatest prize in football and Gundogan feels they ought to break the jinx.Having won every trophy in the domestic scene, the Champions League is one prize that is still eluding the club.“We’ve experienced a lot in the Champions League in recent years – not all of it positive, of course, and we should’ve won it at least once,” said the Germany midfielder via the Mirror.“Every club, every team, every single player would like to lift this trophy sometime. The competition to win it is so big year in, year out, so your chances are not that good, but there’s a team that wins it every year.“If you want to be in the international elite, as a club, and as a player, you need to clinch this trophy.“If we were to win it someday, the club would enter a new era – the same level as Real, Barca, Bayern or Juventus .”City are expected to take the next step by overcoming Gundogan’s hometown club Schalke in the last 16.Time for the knock-outs! ⚽️Sergio Ramos would love a fifth Champions League trophy Manuel R.
