Patients suffer as 100 psychiatric posts remain unfilled, consultants warn

first_imgPatients in need of mental health services are being ‘more unwell’ due to long waiting times in Ireland, according to consultant campaigners. The Irish Hospital Consultants Association claims that 100 permanent psychiatric consultant posts across Ireland’s mental health services are currently either empty or only temporarily filled. The lack of available psychiatrists to treat patients is restricting timely access to much needed services for patients, and resulting in patients becoming more unwell, needing more medications and requiring hospital admission, the IHCA has warned. Recent HSE figures for the first three months of 2019 show that 2,498 children and 3,764 adults were waiting to access to mental health services, while one-in-four of all children and adults referred to these services are not seen within the recommended 12 weeks. The latest figures for Donegal showed that, in October 2018, 240 children across the local region were waiting on an initial Mental Health Services assessments following GP referral.Nine of those children had been on the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, or ‘CAMHS’, waiting list for over nine months while a further eight children have been waiting over a year to receive an appointment.Dr Donal O’Hanlon, a psychiatrist and president of the IHCA, said:“The consultant crisis is severely impacting on the delivering of health services to many of our most vulnerable people. It is now the ‘new norm’ that many consultant psychiatrist posts advertised nationally either have no applicants or only one applicant”. “This leads to two outcomes – these posts remain indefinitely empty or non-specialists are temporarily appointed to specialist psychiatry posts. Both are contrary to the delivery of safe and timely mental health services.”Dr O’Hanlon has called on the Minister for Health to address the consultant crisis. Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Selena Pillay also noted her first-hand experience of long waiting times for patients with mental health problems: “They [patients] become more unwell, need more medications and they also require hospital admissions. This is not good for patients; we need to get them at an earlier stage of their illness.”   Patients suffer as 100 psychiatric posts remain unfilled, consultants warn was last modified: July 15th, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:mental healthlast_img read more

Half-time: Chelsea 1 Real Madrid 2

first_imgRamires scored a lovely goal for Chelsea but Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick means they trail in Miami.Real Madrid made a lively start to the Guinness International Champions Cup final and Marcelo put them ahead by firing into the bottom corner on the quarter-hour mark.Chelsea levelled two minutes later when Ramires finished a nice move by cleverly dinking the ball over keeper Iker Casillas.Ronaldo had a chance to restore Real’s lead but volleyed wide from Marcelo’s cross, before Frank Lampard had an effort saved by Casillas. However, Ronaldo did put his side back in front 13 minutes before the interval and Real ended the first half very much on top.Blues boss Jose Mourinho, coming up against the club he left at the end of last season, opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Oscar and Eden Hazard playing wide of Romelu Lukaku in attack.David Luiz was again absent from the Chelsea squad.Chelsea (4-3-3): Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole; Ramires, Van Ginkel, Lampard; Oscar, Lukaku, Hazard.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 Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Senate subcommittee taking a look at water rule

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The EPA’s latest proposal to define which waters can be regulated by the federal government and which by state and local authorities is a vast improvement over previous efforts, Wyoming Farm Bureau President Todd Fornstrom told the Senate subcommittee on Fisheries, Waters, and Wildlife in June.Expensive professional services needed to comply with the Clean Water Act, he said, too often make it impossible for farmers to use their own land to its fullest.“Farm Bureau cannot overstate the importance of a rule that draws clear lines of jurisdiction that farmers and ranchers can understand without needing to hire armies of consultants and lawyers,” Fornstrom told the subcommittee. “The (Clean Water Act) carries significant fines and penalties for persons who violate the Act’s prohibitions. Historically, farmers and ranchers have chosen to forfeit full use and enjoyment of their land rather than go down the onerous and expensive path of seeking CWA 404 permits. The cost to obtain a general permit can exceed tens of thousands of dollars and individual permits can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Farmers and ranchers know these costs exceed the value of their land, which leads them to simply stay out of the regulatory quagmire by forgoing the use of their land without compensation.”Fornstrom praised the latest proposed rule for its preservation of the Clean Water Act’s partnership among federal, state and local regulators.“The CWA requires the federal government to work hand-in-hand with states, because the federal government cannot and should not regulate every single wet feature in every community, he said. “By drawing clear lines between waters of the U.S. and waters of the state, the proposal strengthens the cooperative federalism Congress envisioned and that the Supreme Court has long recognized as fundamental to the Clean Water Act.”last_img read more

Can Digg Do Real-Time News?

first_imgA great community for crowd sourced news and content, Digg is taking a page from the Twitter playbook and testing its mettle in the real-time stream. Similar to Twitter’s Trending Topics, Digg is set to launch Digg Trends. According to a company blog post , the bookmarking community is offering users a chance to view trending stories before they make it to the home page. True to Digg fashion, this public view of the trend firehose comes with a catch. Voters have 10 minutes to digg or bury a story in order to determine whether it occupies valuable homepage real estate. Digg Trends are identified when stories receive a high volume of comments, favorites and shares. From here a trending story will appear in a box above the site’s “most recent” page content for ten minutes. Within that time frame users decide which stories are worthy for the homepage. In order to ensure that Digg members stay connected to these trends the company is also introducing a new Twitter account with a real-time feed of rising stories. These notifications are likely to increase user engagement and encourage higher traffic to the site during peak hours. What makes this an ingenious member engagement tool for Digg, is that sub-par articles with a high number of comments are likely to incite action. In the past, many of us simply ignored the sensationalist stories that plagued the lower echelons of Diggdom. Nevertheless, with trolls being a driving force in the determination of trends, users will find themselves clicking through simply to right the wrongs in the Digg universe. While real-time shopping notifications like Woot’s Twitter account incentivize users with deals, Digg knows that its members will keep coming back to maintain a sense of justice. The company will be rolling out the trends feature in the near future.
