Lamar’s Axel Vila Antuna & McNeese’s Dalia Ahmed Earn Weekly Tennis Honors

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Lamar’s Axel Vila Antuna and McNeese’s Dalia Ahmed are the Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Antuna earned the Cardinals a point in singles and doubles play at the No. 1 position in a 4-3 team win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday. Lamar looks to build on its second win in three matches with a road match against UT Arlington at 2 p.m. CT Friday before continuing north to Tulsa, Okla., to face Valparaiso and Oral Roberts at noon Saturday and noon Sunday, respectively. The Cardinals round out this week’s action against Texas A&M at noon Tuesday in College Station, Texas.Ahmed claimed all four points possible through the weekend as the Cowgirls (5-4) took down UTSA 6-1 on Friday  and edged Texas State 4-3 on Saturday. McNeese faces Tyler Junior College in the team’s non-conference finale at 1 p.m. Sunday in Lake Charles.Men’s Tennis Player of the Week – Axel Vila Antuna, Lamar – Freshman – Valencia, SpainAntuna defeated UTRGV’s Samuel de Felipe Garcia 6-2, 6-3, in his top-line singles match to extend his singles win streak to four matches.Antuna teamed up with Joshua Taylor to triumph 6-4 over Yehonatan Kaufman and George Hutchings of UTRGV to improve to 3-3 in doubles play at the top slot.Honorable Mention: Tobias Lentz, Nicholls; Sebastian Mortier, Incarnate Word.Women’s Tennis Player of the Week – Dalia Ahmed, McNeese – Freshman – Cairo, EgyptAhmed dropped set one 6-7 to UTSA’s Charleen Tiwari but took a 4-1 advantage in set two before Tiwari retired. Ahmed swept her Texas State opponent, Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-1, for her fourth-straight win in singles play.Ahmed and partner Giovanna Fioretti came out on top 6-4 in both of their doubles matches, including the final point in the 4-3 team win over Texas State.
