The construction of new buildings at the Dominica State College is an important milestone in the development of our country.”The minister also quoted former United States President Thomas Jefferson in explaining his government’s goal to educate the populace.“It was Thomas Jefferson a US President who said and I quote; “A nation cannot be ignorant and free and it therefore follows that societies will become more democratic and civil as citizens become more knowledgeable and educated.” Thus, this Labour Party Government places high premium on the education of the masses, we believe that in order to survive in this highly competitive world we must educate, not only the young but we must go a step further at re-education or re-schooling of the older members of the population,” he said.According to Mr Timothy, his government “envisages that the Dominica State College will play a pivotal role in furthering these lofty goals as we strive to educate the Dominican populace for national development”.Officials with students of the Dominica State College performing the official cutting of the ribbons to signal the launching of the projectMeantime Minister of Education Petter Saint Jean noted that the launching ceremony also marks an important milestone in the development of tertiary education on the island.“This ground breaking ceremony marks an important milestone in the development of the Dominica State College. In fact it is an essential step in the provision of the infrastructure necessary to accommodate the increasing number of college students and to meet the increasing demand of access to tertiary education. Mr Saint Jean further stated that the new facilities will assist in enhancing the quality of education offered at the Dominica State College and also facilitate the college’s goal to introduce bachelor degrees.“The facility to be constructed under this project will enhance the quality of education provided at this institution. It will also create the condition for eventually offering the first degree programs here beginning with the bachelor’s degree in nursing. These new and improved facilities will improve and provide limitless opportunities for acquiring the kinds and levels of skills required to meet the emerging demands of the work place and facilitate the expansion and development of the Dominican economy,” he said.The project includes construction of an arts and science building, and agricultural training centre, a library, an auditorium building and renovation works to existing buildings.The expected completion date for this project is December 2012.
