Image: A malfunction rendering the emergency generator inoperable yesterday has caused Carnival Dream to be detained in her scheduled port of call, St. Maarten, with 4,363 passengers and 1,370 crew onboard. At no time did the ship lose power and the ship’s propulsion systems and primary power sources were not impacted, however, the line deemed it unsafe to sail back to Carnival Dream’s homeport of Port Canaveral without an emergency back up generator.Contrary to reports via social media, Carnival has confirmed that, apart from a short period of time last night, there were no interruptions to the restroom and elevator service with only one public restroom taken offline due to toilet overflow and one request for cleaning of a guest cabin bathroom. All restrooms and elevators were operational again as of 12:30am last night local time.Passengers have been given the option to disembark the ship to visit St. Maarten until their scheduled return home, with Carnival providing a complimentary water taxi service for passengers wishing to explore other areas of the island. All passengers will be flown via a combination of private charter and commercial flights to either Orlando for the quickest access back to Port Canaveral, or their final destination and will be given a refund equivalent to the three days left of the voyage and a 50 percent discount off a future cruise.Carnival Dream’s 16 March voyage has been cancelled with passengers booked receiving a full refund and 25 percent discount off a future seven-day cruise. Those who select to rebook will have their rate protected on the future sailing.Any passengers not sailing with a passport have been cleared by the local authorities to travel.Carnival has arranged two special performances by Grammy Award winning Jon Secada onboard tonight as a way of thanking their passengers for their patience.last_img read more
