21 days agoArsenal title winner Smith: Martinelli has striker instincts

first_imgArsenal title winner Smith: Martinelli has striker instinctsby Paul Vegas21 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal title winner Alan Smith believes Gabriel Martinelli can play as a striker long-term.He wrote for the London Evening Standard: “Following on from his brace against Nottingham Forest, another two goals last night to soften up Standard Liege spoke of a teenager going places fast. We hear he is better suited long term to a role on the wing, the position where he made his name at Ituano in Brazil. “But his clever movement here suggested otherwise. The near-post dash across his marker to glance home a marvellous header. The skilful shimmy and shot to curl in the second. These aren’t the hallmarks of a winger filling in. They point to a front man with natural goalscoring instincts.”At 18, Martinelli obviously has much to learn. Pitted against better defenders, his hold-up play will need to gain nous. He’ll have to get stronger to protect the ball. But the basic ingredients are in place. He doesn’t need telling how to find space in the box — a wonderful asset for the challenge ahead.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

first_imgLampard can’t contain excitement after Chelsea claim ‘huge’ Ajax victoryby Freddie Taylora day agoSend to a friendShare the loveChelsea manager Frank Lampard could not hide his excitement at his side’s performance and victory over Ajax. The Blues were made to fight hard against last season’s Champions League semi finalists in the group stages. But they emerged with a vital away win in Amsterdam, thanks to a late Michy Batshuayi goal.”It feels huge,” Lampard said.”That always scares me because there’s a lot to do and it’s just six points halfway through the group now but we’re entitled to be excited about how we played tonight.”It can be a bit of a blueprint for us in terms of the work from the midfield players which was outstanding, the work of the wingers was outstanding, the work of the full-backs getting out to top players and stopping them making passes and easy decisions was absolutely outstanding.”I could go through them all – Kurt Zouma, what a performance – but there’s no excuses for us now to dip from that.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Bale puts transfer saga aside to set up Real Madrid’s first goal

first_imgGareth Bale put the confusion surrounding his future to one side on Saturday when he set up Real Madrid’s opening goal against Celta Vigo in La Liga. The game at the Bernabeu was just 12 minutes old when the Wales international bamboozled his marker to spit a shot across goal that was turned home at the far post by Karim Benzema. The assist was the eighth time Bale had been involved in a goal against Celta in just nine games against the team from Spain’s northwest coast, having scored six and assisted twice since arriving in La Liga in 2013. Even before the end of the transfer window, everything can happen.”Real are looking to win their first La Liga title since 2017 when Zidane’s team overpowered Barcelona to take first place.Last term was an unmitigated disaster by the club’s standards, spending much of the first half of the season flailing in midtable under the doomed reign of former coach Julen Lopetegui. They crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage to Ajax, a defeat that saw Lopetegui’s replacement Santiago Solari dismissed to permit the return of Zidane, three-time winner of Europe’s top prize during his first stint on the Madrid bench.last_img read more

He is also the son of a prominent college football coach: Arkansas’s Chad Morris.Morris took over the Razorbacks this off-season, after three years rebuilding SMU into a respectable team in the AAC. He’s known for developing high-powered offenses, so we shouldn’t be shocked that his son is apparently a solid quarterback recruit.Since he is still a full class away, he hasn’t been ranked yet. However, big-time college football programs are taking note.Arkansas recently offered Chandler Morris, but they weren’t even the first Power Five program to do so.That would be the school at which Chad Morris really cut his teeth. Dabo Swinney, Morris’s former boss, and the Clemson Tigers extended an offer after a camp earlier this month.Had a great time at Clemson’s camp! He announced the new offer late last night.Excited to receive an offer from The University of Arkansas! #WPS pic.twitter.com/VrK2dVVMQ7— Chandler Morris (@Chandleram4) June 16, 2018He had to perform before his father made the offer, though. Morris participated at the Razorback Elite QB/WR camp this week.According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, he was a standout quarterback at the event:He enjoyed taking part at the Arkansas camp with his father roaming around the two practice fields interacting with other campers.“It’s fun,” Morris said. “All of the coaches know me. It’s fun to go out and compete.”Morris was one of the standouts of the camp that featured Hog commitment KJ Jefferson and newly offered Jacolby Criswell. He showed good arm strength and a nice touch while operating like a seasoned veteran. He would embrace getting an offer from his father. With those two earlier P5 offers, plenty of others should pour in soon. It seems likely that he’ll be a Razorback in a few years, but you can’t count out the possibility that he’ll want to blaze his own trail.last_img read more

Jim Harbaugh Reveals How Often He Hears About Ohio State

(Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)When you are the head coach of Michigan, you are judged on a number of things. First and foremost, perhaps, is your ability to beat Ohio State.Jim Harbaugh has not done that yet. He is 0-3 against the Wolverines’ biggest rivals, including a heartbreaking loss two years ago.Appearing on The Dan Patrick Show today, Harbaugh was asked how often he hears about the Buckeyes. His answer? Pretty much daily.“It probably gets mentioned once a day, sure,” Harbaugh said. “That’s a big deal around these parts, always has been, is and always will be.”You can listen to Harbaugh’s full interview with Patrick below.A win over Ohio State on Nov. 24 would do more than change some of the narrative surrounding Harbaugh in Ann Arbor. It would likely clinch the Big Ten East and send the Wolverines to play for the league title.Additionally, it would put Michigan in position to clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff, provided it beats its Big Ten West opponent in the conference championship game.Win that game and Harbaugh might buy himself some time to not hear about Ohio State.last_img read more
